Bio

Steven M. Crane, MBA, PhD is a consultant, educator and expert in sustainable finance. He has over two decades of experience designing and implementing sustainable change strategies for social enterprises by aligning financial management, relationship development, and organizational behavior. His passion is to identify strategies that strengthen the financial position and sustainability of enterprises and deliver positive social impacts.

The seeds for his passion originated during his career as a commercial banker in a large regional bank. He began a search for business models that were more financially sustainable, having experienced the peaks and flows of business cycles and their impact on his client’s businesses. Steve sensed that change was needed in how businesses were managed and how decisions were made. The search eventually led him to explore the field of organizational change. He decided to make a career shift and earned a doctorate in Organization Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. With this additional know how, he was now able to provide a more holistic approach to helping business achieve financial and social sustainability.

After completing his graduate work, he advised various enterprises using this holistic approach. These advisory relationships included Greater Bay Bank Corp, California Bank & Trust and Mid-Peninsula Bank, Charles Schwab & Co., the East Bay Conservation Corps, and various other SME’s.

In addition to the consulting work, Steve has been teaching finance in graduate schools for the past 17 years and has been at Presidio Graduate School since September 2007. He has taught and co-managed the Executive Certificate Program in Sustainable Management and taught Capstone and Capital Markets. He is a member of the core faculty team and continues to teach a managerial finance course that fully integrates sustainability while holding various academic administrative responsibilities.

The PGS experience has expanded his holistic approach toward the evolving field of Sustainable Finance, which attempts to unify value from three forms of capital: social, ecological, and financial. In 2014, he co-founded the Garrison Project, which brought together a group of educators from the fields of finance, accounting, and quantitative methods (FAQ) to explore reframing the concept of value and expand a network of higher education educators who wish to advance the integration of sustainability into FAQ.

Although he has spent most of his adulthood in the San Francisco Bay Area, he still claims roots in Michigan where he was born, raised and received his BA degree in Art History with a focus on Asian Art and Culture from the University of Michigan.
