This has been a busy season for Lina Constantinovici (C6). In addition to carrying the torch as the President of the Presidio Graduate School Alumni Association for the past, nearly two years, while traveling around the world championing Biomimicry and working on another dozen or so projects, Lina also recently managed to find time to fall in love to a handsome Brit and get married. Congratulations to Lina and Ian, who were married in Sonoma on April 20, 2013 with many Presidio colleagues in attendance.
Lina is an entrepreneur, strategist, business advisor, and sustainability expert with extensive experience building and growing companies. Over the past six years, Lina has worked with early-stage ventures as a startup advisor, a mentor for the Hub Ventures Accelerator and Cleantech Open, and has co-founded several incubators.
One of the ventures she founded is StartupNectar, a biomimicry incubator located in San Francisco launched with support from all-star Presidio team: Kartika Tulusan-Chendorain (C13) and Julie Sammons (C8). StartupNectar specializes in incubating business ventures that are informed by biomimicry—the process of studying and emulating nature’s effective designs to drive product and service innovation.StartupNectar builds an incubation process that enables ventures to succeed in the marketplace by creating conditions conducive to life, modeled on nature’s most enduring designs. Building on Presidio Graduate School principles of systems thinking, StartupNectar’s vision is to co-create a resilient, adaptive, and thriving economy inspired by nature’s best strategies.
In January, StartupNectar launched an accelerator program for 10 teams with Biomimicry water solutions from 8 countries around the world, in partnership with Biomimicry 3.8. The pilot cohort of teams was featured in a TriplePundit article; here’s info on the solutions that StartupNectar is incubating.
March 21, Lina spoke in Geneva on the opening panel of the Inside Outliers: Driving Systemic Change conference on Biomimicry as an outlier innovation strategy. While in Europe, Lina taught a master class on applying biomimicry to business, to MBA students at Aalto University in Helsinki. In May, Lina co-produced a 3-day 3D Printing and Biomaterials event in partnership with Swissnex and the Global Cleantech Cluster Association, with contribution from Jay Ogilvy leading a scenario process to produce a road map towards a Sustainable 3D Printing industry. In June, Lina spoke on the Optimizing Supply Chain panel at Sustainable Brands, on the integration of 3D Printing into traditional manufacturing.
Additionally, as head of U.S. Operations, Lina contributed to building GrowVC: the first online, global marketplace for entrepreneurs. As a sustainability strategist, Lina has worked with Walmart, W Hotels, the EPA, the San Francisco Department of Environment on defining CSR strategic goals and on sustainability standards design. She currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of the Silicon Valley Environmental Partnership.
