Presidio Graduate School Equips K-12 Educators of All Subjects With Climate Science in New Program

K-12 Climate Change Essentials for all Educators will engage and equip educators of all grade levels and subjects with the tools needed to incorporate climate science curriculum into the classroom

MAR. 9, 2021 – San Francisco – Presidio Graduate School (PGS), a nonprofit, accredited institution with a mission to educate changemakers to build a flourishing future for all, today announced its newest certificate program, Climate Change Essentials for All Educators, subject area, or state requirements.

“Climate change is a defining issue of our time,” said PGS President Elizabeth Maw. “We believe education is an antidote to this massive, all-encompassing problem, and it’s not limited to science classrooms alone. From language arts to math to history, integrated education is a catalyst for creating real change, and Climate Change Essentials for All Educators represents the future of education.”

Through Climate Change Essentials for All Educators, teachers will develop fundamental climate literacy and analyze existing educational standards and practices to discover how climate science is relevant to their subject matter and grade level. They also will learn to identify credible climate science resources and learn how to overcome objections to teaching climate science. Spanning the program, teachers will be encouraged to actively participate in a network of fellow educators to ask questions, share real-life classroom experiences, and grow their professional development.

“Research indicates a majority of K-12 educators in America are interested in teaching about climate change, but there are roadblocks to do so effectively,” Maw said. “When educators are equipped, supported, and confident in teaching about climate change, the next generation of students will graduate with a foundational understanding of the subject and their role in addressing it.”

Climate Change Essentials for All Educators is spearheaded by PGS and supported by several prominent climate science educators including Wilford Welch. The price and format are designed for equitable access for working educators from every background. Program participants will complete 45 hours of coursework over nine modules through a fully online format. Then, educators will complete 15 hours of post-course work, where they will exercise their knowledge in the classroom format, for a total of 60 professional development hours

The inaugural Climate Change Essentials program for K-12 educators will start April 12th. To learn more about the program and enroll in the course, visit https://www.presidio.edu/teachclimate.
