In this role, Nils oversees this rapidly evolving North American network of over 145 cities representing more than 80 million people. USDN fosters collaborating on local innovations for sustainability and supports its members who are on the front lines of addressing the issues surrounding climate change, preparedness, and social sustainability. This past year, USDN also launched the Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance – a collaboration of vanguard international cities committed to achieving aggressive long-term carbon reduction goals. Previously, Nils was the Mayor’s Senior Aide and Sustainability Advisor for the City of Berkeley and was one of the founding team members responsible for creating Berkeley’s innovative solar financing program, which has since become a national model of renewable energy financing (PACE). Last but not least, Nils has enjoyed co-teaching EMCA (Effective Management, Communication & Action) with Carl Schneebeck for the past 8 years.
Ali is focused on the power of humor to win hearts, minds, and guts, developing funny but seriously effective videos for organizations like Alliance for Climate Education and NextGen Climate. Earlier this year, she created and produced a web series for NextGen Climate called Spotlight California. The 5-episode series followed comedian Kiran Deol around California, exploring how the all-powerful oil industry has impacted our lives in the most environmentally conscious state in the union. Leveraging personal stories and humor to engage viewers, the series avoids using politicized terms in an effort to rally everyone behind forces we need to fight like pollution and corruption. Spotlight California will be making its way to festivals and conferences like Net Impact and SXSW Eco throughout 2016.
Greg is Sustainable Energy Strategist at NRG Energy, where he is initiating and delivering creative, sustainable energy solutions crafted to meet the needs of individual commercial and industrial partners in the new clean energy economy. Greg has designed sustainability solutions, from opportunity to strategy to execution by connecting corporate and sustainability strategy and focusing on value creation for our customers and clients by connecting carbon reduction strategy to asset management and long-term growth in the power generation industry. NRG Energy is a Fortune 200 Company that owns and operates one of the country’s largest and most diverse power generation portfolios.
Leann has been working tirelessly to improve the supply chain practices of large corporations such as Google, where she is currently working for a more responsible and sustainable supply chain. She has also done the same at SunPower and Sun Microsystems Inc. Leann’s work to help organizations address conflict minerals and other key supply issues is having a major impact on the procurement practices in the technology sector.
Morgan is the Program Manager and Design Strategist for N Square: The Crossroads for Nuclear Innovation — a $2.4 million dollar two-year pilot of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Skoll Global Threats Fund and Ploughshares Fund—responsible for creating a new model of funding in the nuclear security community. Drawing on successful approaches from venture capital, technology, social media, and other arenas, N Square will make experimental investments designed to build a new generation of leaders and influencers committed to the peace and security of a world free from the threat of nuclear weapons.
Sandra’s most recent accomplishment is founding 10Power, a social venture addressing international development at the local level. The business model is project management and financing for renewable energy projects in under-served communities internationally. Beginning with solar PV projects for businesses, clinics, and schools in Haiti, 10Power is creating a blueprint for sustainable development that can scale impact across the globe. An essential part of their social impact is training and employing local women. Sandra built a strong team of Presidio Alumni and other experts in their field to execute their ambitious global strategy.
Matt is the award-winning VP of Investor Relations for LinkedIn, scaling mission-driven companies to create economic opportunity through for-profit business models. He is also an Aspen Institute First Mover. He is doing the hard work of protecting a publicly traded but mission-driven company from short-term financial market pressure through investor education. He had a very interesting year as the stock dropped 40%.

CONSCIOUS COMPANY, founded in 2014, is the first print and digital, nationally distributed publication in the US to focus solely on sustainable business and business as a force for good. Based in Boulder, Colorado, the publication first hit stands nationwide in January 2015. With four issues in 2015 and moving to a bi-monthly production schedule in 2016, the publication has quickly become a leading source of information for and about sustainable businesses.
Meghan and Maren came to together with a shared mission to leverage the power of storytelling and great design to broaden the conversation about using business as a force for good. They believe that a new definition of success in business is emerging — a definition that is motivated by a growing dissatisfaction with the “status quo,” an overall shift towards a values-driven economy, and one that is ultimately centered on a company’s ability to have a positive effect on society and the environment. They are a great example of the united impact our Seattle and San Francisco campuses are making.
